Unsecured wireless not working in IE?

I have a gateway notebook and I am trying to connect to an unsecured wireless connection. It works on my laptop but on my notebook it states that I am connected but when i open up IE I get the error "can not display this web page" I have tried everything i know. Anyone know why this may be?
